Captain John Smith, who voyaged to the coasts of Maine and Massachusetts in 1614, was the first to refer to the portion of North America from Long Island to Newfoundland as “New England” in his published account of his two voyages to the region, A Description of New England. One of the older American regions, New England is rich in history and has a culture shaped by waves of European immigration.

Of these institutes, 90 are public and 175 are private; 202 are four year institutes, while 63 are two year colleges. Just under half of New England’s postsecondary institutions are located in the state of Massachusetts. New England also offers a wide range of diploma and certificate programs at numerous career and technical colleges across the region.
