Regional Overview
The Northwest comprises seven states – Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington. Located in the northwestern corner of the United States, the region is bordered by the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan; North Dakota; South Dakota; Wyoming; Colorado; a single point of New Mexico; Arizona; California and the Pacific Ocean. Alaska, however, is situated in northwestern portion of North America. The state is bordered by Canada’s Yukon Territory and the province of British Columbia and is mainly surrounded by bodies of water: the Gulf of Alaska, the Pacific Ocean, the Bering Sea, the Bering Strait, Chukchi Sea, the Beaufort Sea and the Arctic Ocean. Alaska is both the largest and least densely populated US state with a population of 683 thousand and area of 663,267 square miles. The rest of the Northwest region has a population of approximately 17.8 million, or about 6 per cent of the nation’s total, and covers 596,071 square miles.

The Northwest’s higher education system includes 242 universities and colleges (120 of these are public institutes and 122 are private; 139 are four year institutes and 103 are two year colleges), which enrol over 911 thousand undergraduate students annually in the fall. Most of the region’s colleges and universities are located in Washington, followed by Oregon. Although Nevada has only 23 universities and colleges, it enrols over 100 thousand undergraduate students annually in the fall.
